Week 5

What a FANTASTIC AOK week!  :)  This week on Monday I was watching the season premiere of Ellen & I got inspired for our next big project!  There was a principal from a school in Las Vegas, NV that goes way above & beyond helping her students & their families so they can concentrate on school & making a better life for themselves.  Her name was Sherrie Gahn & I was SO INSPIRED by her.  The next day, I showed my kids a clip from the show & they were just as inspired as I was!  So...I called their school to see what they needed & the things they need the most are clothes & food so I decided to contact our area Wal-Mart & Target & see if they could donate anything & take up a collection in our class so we can send the school gift cards so they can use them for their current greatest needs.  We decided this would be the best approach since both food/clothes would be heavy to mail & the food might get damaged along the way.  This allows us to also put all the money towards the gift cards instead of S & H!  I LOVE that we've decided to help a school away from us & that the "ripple effect" of our project is in full swing!  :)
We also wrote a Get Well card for one of our students this week.  We took another class's library books back to the library for them.  Mrs. Goodwin asked us to empty her recycle trash for her today-we love that we're getting a "rep" for being willing to do an Act of Kindness for other people. :)  We replenished our hummingbird food today-which we decided was an Act of Kindness for our 2 resident hummingbirds.  (Which also brought up a pretty lively debate about if hummingbirds migrate or not! LOL! ;)
The icing on the cake for a great AOK week for us was mail we received today-we got a Thank-You letter from Coach Pat Summitt today for the Get Well cards we send her!  My kids were SO EXCITED & impressed!  It was so thoughtful of her to send us a letter back-she even commented on their nice artwork, which of course made their day!  :)
Next week is a short week so hopefully we can do an AOK everyday.  We're looking forward to stuffing the soldiers boxes the week after that.  I actually have 2 very sweet ladies that have agreed to come help us stuff the boxes, a former teacher that has done this project before & is going to "show us the ropes" and the grandmother of 3 of the soldiers we're sending the boxes to!  What a WONDERFUL week!  :)
